Tabitha Brown is light, she is joy, she is the embodiment of positivity. I have been following her for years on Instagram. I would go to her for a pick me up and a dose of sunshine in my day.

What I love about Tabs is her way of communicating with us either through Instagram or her book, Feeding The Soul (because it’s my business): Finding Our Way To Joy, Love, and Freedom. She has this really unique way of making you feel like she speaking directly to you and that you’re a dear friend or part of her fam and inner circle.

I will tell you that while reading her book there were some lessons that I definitely needed to hear. They came at the right time for me and I was open to the message as we head into a new year. Some of them were things I have been working on for years and were reminders that helped solidify for me the importance of continuing the work. It’s not always easy, but necessary for living a healthier, more emotionally fulfilled life.

In the first part of the book, she talks about “Your Gifts, Your Business” and “Your Personal Prescription”. I have been getting deeper into the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion space at work over the last few years. This involvement in driving change at work has brought me so much passion and joy. Not to say it’s always easy. Change takes time, hard work and difficult conversations, but I have never felt more fulfilled or like what I’m doing is impactful. I see the changes coming, albeit slowly, and it’s hugely motivating for me to keep going. This is a marathon not a sprint! Tabitha says “Too many people leave this world without ever letting their brilliance and creativity see the light of day. Don’t you dare be one of them! Start using those gifts — and watch your world start to change.” I can only expect change in others if I’m willing to make change within myself.

Something else she said particularly resonated with me, “Yes, go on and speak those dreams out loud. You have to share them with somebody so that somebody can validate that you, in fact, had the vision.” I have started speaking my dreams out loud in 2021 and I will continue to do so. I have been thinking recently that I want to write a book. Self doubt crept in and in my mind I was saying what unique story do I have to tell. Whether I do or I don’t, I made a decision over the holiday break that I’m going to do it. It might just be for me, it might just be for my kids and my family, but regardless I’m speaking my dream. I took action, purchased a writing tool app and started writing this week.

Tabitha’s talk about forgiveness, regret, empathy and gratitude spoke to my heart. I have been on a journey to build understanding and empathy for others especially in the difficult times we are all experiencing now. I am working to reserve snap judgements and seek to understand what the other is experiencing and their potential hardships that are causing their reactions first. She reminds us that just because someone seems good, they might be struggling. How appreciative would you be if someone gave you the benefit of the doubt and supported you when you might not even know how much you needed it?

I will leave you with this message from Tabs. “That’s why I firmly believe it is our job as humans to take the time to check in on each other. I don’t care how great someone looks, they could be falling apart inside.” Feeding The Soul was inspirational, spiritual and an uplifting way to end the year. I am motivated to step into 2022 with positivity, forgiveness, empathy and love….”because it’s my business”!
