Black History: Civil Rights Champions (Wall)
Shades of Color's 2023 Black History Calendar, Civil Rights Champions, showcases leaders of the movement, who used their positions to demand equality. During the 1950s and 1960s, many struggled for social justice, in particular for Black Americans to gain equal rights under the law in the United States. Frederick Douglass paved the path as an abolitionist, Ida B. Wells used journalism to shine a light on injustice, icons such as Harry Belafonte and Aretha Franklin fought in the streets as well as on stage. Important organizers like Ralph Abernathy and Andrew Young stood beside Martin Luther King, Jr in protest, and Dr. King dedicated his life to fighting for quality eventually making the ultimate sacrifice. Despite obstacles, these leaders made major contributions to the movement, and continue to open doors and inspire others to achieve their dreams and use their voices.
